Test centres

Which test centre will you use?

Most Watford learners test at Watford test centre (CP House, Otterspool Way, WD25 8HU), but Borehamwood and Pinner are both close enough to be real options. Each one tests different skills, so it's worth choosing on purpose.

Test centreWhat the routes are likePass rate
WatfordA good mix of fast dual carriageways (up to 70mph), town driving and a little country road. Great for building a well-rounded driver.52.7%
BorehamwoodSimilar to Watford, with fast A roads and dual carriageways, but more country roads. The limit there is 60mph, though 35–40mph is often the safe speed.46.8%
PinnerSlower: mostly 20 and 30mph roads, with a couple of 40s. The challenge is meeting situations on streets lined with parked cars on both sides.48.5%

Pass rates: DVSA, April 2024 to March 2025.

Don't worry about the 70mph roads. You build up to them gradually, and the examiner wants a safe, sensible speed for the conditions, not a fast one.

Local roads

Roads you'll learn on in Watford

Where we start: Cassiobury Estate

Complete beginners start on the Cassiobury Estate. The roads are quiet, straight and wide, so even with cars parked on both sides you have plenty of space, and there's very little traffic. There's also a quiet roundabout where you can practise before tackling busier ones on the main roads.

The three spots that catch Watford learners out

  • Turning right from a side road onto the dual carriageway at the lights

The skill is positioning. Many learners find it daunting to drive far enough into the junction before turning, but that's exactly what you need to do. We practise it until it feels natural.

  • The Hartspring roundabout, just outside the test centre

You join it from a national speed limit road, with fast-moving traffic and several lanes entering. Spotting a safe gap and building your speed up smoothly takes practice, so we drive it many times before your test.

  • The right turn onto the dual carriageway at Garston

The road markings are faded, and it's easy to miss the gap in the central reservation where you can wait. Some learners try to cross both carriageways in one go. We'll teach you to use the central reservation safely instead.

Dual carriageways and the A41

You'll definitely drive on the A41 and other dual carriageways, both in lessons and on your test. We build up to them on slower roads first, practising lane changes and joining traffic until you're confident.

The ring road and town centre

A small part of the Watford test can take you onto the ring road. We leave it until later in your training, once you're confident changing lanes and dealing with traffic lights and busy pedestrian crossings. By then it's easier than it looks: the limit is 30mph, and the key is following your lane and reading the road markings.

What we avoid, and why

Early on, we skip the parts of the ring road that don't feature on the test. We also avoid the roundabouts by the large Tesco and Lidl at rush hour. You'd spend your lesson sitting in traffic instead of learning.
