Test centres

Which test centre will you use?

Most Borehamwood learners test at Borehamwood test centre, with Barnet, Mill Hill and Hendon all close by. Borehamwood is the most varied of the four: you get town driving like the London centres, plus more dual carriageway and country roads.

Test centreWhat the routes are likePass rate
BorehamwoodDual carriageways including the A1, lots of roundabouts of different sizes, town and residential roads, and more country roads than the London centres.46.8%
BarnetResidential roads and faster A roads, with very little country driving.49.9%
Mill HillResidential streets plus dual carriageways, and Apex Corner where the A1 meets the A41. Shares some routes with Hendon.51.1%
HendonMore dual-carriageway driving than any other local centre, plus some driving around central Hendon. Includes the approach to Apex Corner.49.5%

Pass rates: DVSA, April 2024 to March 2025.

Part of the reason for the lower pass rate is what the routes ask of you: narrow, twisting country roads with high speed limits and the odd cyclist. That's exactly why we teach on those roads, and pupils who learn them well come out as more complete drivers.

Local roads

Roads you'll learn on in Borehamwood

Where we start: quiet roads in Radlett

Complete beginners start on quiet residential roads around Radlett, away from the main routes. You build your confidence and awareness of the car there before we head onto main roads.

The spots that catch Borehamwood learners out

  • Straight out onto the A1

Right after leaving the test centre, you turn right, then left onto the A1. You need to join busy traffic and build your speed up quickly, and it's one of the first things you do, before your nerves have settled. Technically it's very manageable, and it's mainly a confidence test. We practise it so many times that it feels automatic on the day.

  • Roundabouts, lots of them

Borehamwood routes include roundabouts of every size. You'll naturally get good at them, because you'll drive so many during lessons.

Country roads and national speed limit driving

Borehamwood has more country roads than the London centres: narrow, twisting roads with a 60mph limit where the safe speed is often much lower. There's often no pavement to help you judge your road position, and passing cyclists needs care. We practise on the actual test-route country roads, so you know what's coming next and can drive them with confidence.

What we avoid, and why

Outside your test time, we avoid 8–9am and 2:30–3:30pm, especially on the A1, the roads approaching Stirling Corner and the school routes heading to Borehamwood's main shopping street. You'd spend the lesson in traffic instead of learning. If your test is booked for a busy time, we'll practise then too.
