Test centres

Which test centre will you use?

Mill Hill learners have four test centres within easy reach: Mill Hill (Unit 9, Grannard Business Centre, Bunns Lane, NW7 2DQ), Hendon, Barnet and Borehamwood. Mill Hill and Hendon are under five minutes apart and test very similar skills.

Test centreWhat the routes are likePass rate
Mill HillResidential streets plus dual carriageways, and Apex Corner where the A1 meets the A41. Shares some routes with Hendon.51.1%
HendonMore dual-carriageway driving than any other local centre, plus some driving around central Hendon. Includes the approach to Apex Corner.49.5%
BarnetResidential roads and faster A roads, with very little country driving.49.9%
BorehamwoodFast A roads and dual carriageways, plus more country roads. These often have no pavement, which makes lane position harder to judge, and you may need to pass cyclists.46.8%

Pass rates: DVSA, April 2024 to March 2025.

In our experience, Mill Hill, Hendon and Barnet suit most learners best, because their routes include little or no country driving. Borehamwood is a good choice once you're confident on faster, narrower rural roads. Whichever you pick, we'll practise on its actual routes.

Local roads

Roads you'll learn on in Mill Hill

Where we start

Complete beginners start on quiet residential roads away from the main routes, with very little traffic. That gives you time to get used to the car, your surroundings and your checks before we go anywhere busy.

The three spots that catch Mill Hill learners out

  • Apex Corner, where the A1 meets the A41

Every entrance to this big roundabout has traffic lights, except the one you approach from on test. You have to time your move between traffic coming from your right and traffic already on the roundabout, each controlled by its own lights, and the gap is short. With three lanes entering side by side, the car next to you can also block part of your view. Learners often feel rushed, misjudge the gap or stall. We drive it again and again until it feels routine, and you'll learn there's no need to rush onto it.

  • Stirling Corner, towards Borehamwood

This is a spiral roundabout. When you turn right, it's tempting to stay in the inside lane all the way round, but the lane markings gradually guide you out to the left, and you need to follow them. It feels odd at first and becomes easy with practice.

  • A narrow set of traffic lights where you turn right

Only two cars fit in the junction, and oncoming drivers often go straight ahead without signalling while angled slightly left, as if they're turning. We'll teach you how to read what they're really doing before you commit to your turn.

The A1 and A41

The 50mph dual carriageways sound scary, but they're easier than most people think: you're mostly driving in a straight line, with several lanes to use. Once you're handling traffic well, we start at a comfortable speed and build up gradually until you're confident at 50mph.

Hill starts

We practise hill starts on Bittacy Rise, one of the steepest hills in the area, just off the Pursley Road and Devonshire Road test route. Master that one and every other hill on your test feels easy.

What we avoid, and why

Outside your test time, we avoid the busiest periods: around 8–9am and 2:30–3:30pm, especially on the dual carriageways approaching Apex Corner and on Mill Hill Broadway. You'd spend the lesson in traffic rather than learning. If your test is booked for one of those times, though, we'll practise then too, so you know exactly what the roads will be like.

Mill Hill had the highest pass rate of the four in 2024–25, and its routes, like Hendon's and Barnet's, include little country driving. Borehamwood adds more rural roads, which suit confident drivers. We'll help you choose, then practise on that centre's routes.

We only take you there once you're handling traffic well, then practise it repeatedly until it feels routine. The key lesson is that there's no pressure to rush on: you wait for your lights and a safe gap.
